Orange seeds in particular were brought to the Caribbean in 1493 by Christopher Columbus and later transferred by Spanish missionaries to California in 1769. And although oranges had no problems immediately becoming very popular, thanks to their sweetish taste, for grapefruit the story was quite different. If today the grapefruit is one of the fruits most loved by American citizens, it is strangely due to the Great Depression. In 1929, the New York Stock Exchange crashed leaving millions unemployed. Since then it went from an elite product to survival food and was distributed free of charge in exchange for food vouchers.
